Skelwith Bridge Parking:

You can park for the Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge walk along the roadside near the Talbot Bar. Alternatively, a pay-and-display car park is located just across the road, also offering convenient access to the trail.

Skelwith Bridge Walk: A Scenic Trail with Stunning Views

The walk from Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater is suitable any time of day and ideal for all ages, including children and dogs. It’s an easy, well maintained route just 2.8 miles from the bustling tourist hub of Ambleside.

This is an out-and-back walk. One way, it covers 5 km (3.1 miles); a return trip totals 10 km (6.2 miles).

Top Tip: Start your walk with a coffee from Chesters By The River café or a drink at the Talbot Bar pub. Both are right next to the Skelwith Bridge Hotel.

Walking west from the Talbot Bar, you’ll find an easy path leading into the woodlands. This trail joins the Cumbria Way and follows the tree lined River Brathay. Soon, on your left, you’ll spot Skelwith Force-a stunning, powerful waterfall with white water rushing down. If you’re lucky, you might see brown trout leaping out of the water at the base of the falls.

The water is fast and deep, so be sure to stay on the viewing platform and keep dogs on a lead. From there, you can safely enjoy perfect views and take great photos.

Continue along the Cumbria Way path beside the River Brathay for a pleasant stroll to Elterwater Lake. This small, beautiful lake is perfect for skimming stones or simply relaxing. Take in the stunning backdrop views of the Langdale Pikes as you chill by the water.

Elterwater is a charming Lakeland village known for its traditional slate buildings. Elterwater Bridge, spanning the Great Langdale Beck, is Grade II listed and dates back to 1702. This historic bridge offers a glimpse into Elterwater’s past and showcases the region’s architectural heritage.
