A Gem in Lancashire, Just Minutes from The Lake District
Located just over the border in neighbouring Lancashire, the picturesque town of Silverdale is a scenic coastal retreat well worth the short trip from the Lake District. With its expansive beaches and magnificent views of Morecambe Bay, Silverdale offers a peaceful alternative to the busier tourist spots. This makes the beach a must visit for anyone exploring the region.
Silverdale Beach Car Park: Best Parking Options
Silverdale Beach is easily reached by car, just a short drive south from Kendal along the A6. The route takes you through the pleasant Lancashire countryside and passes through notable towns like Milnthorpe. One of Silverdale’s most delightful features is its ease of access. After winding through the quaint village, known for its distinctive limestone buildings, you’ll find a car park right by the shoreline. You can literally park just steps from the sea, for just £2 in an honesty box. Alternatively, you will find further parking in the town itself, only a short walk from the beach.
Getting to the Beach
From the car park, head left along the grassy coastal path or right to the white pebble beach.
The beach is perfect for relaxing with a book, and enjoying the sea breeze. To the right, you’ll see Grange-over-Sands across the bay; to the left, Morecambe appears in the distance. Also visible is the distinctive silhouette of the Heysham nuclear power station, a landmark on the horizon.
Wildlife and Wide Sands
When the tide goes out-and it really goes far, it reveals a vast stretch of clay like sand.
This area is a haven for birdwatchers, with seagulls, oystercatchers, and curlews foraging in the sand.
The wider Arnside and Silverdale area is well known for its wildlife, coastal beauty, and peaceful natural landscapes.
The tide goes out pretty far-about 1.2 km (0.7 miles) by my count. Shallow pools dot the sandy plain, making it look like the surface of another planet.
However, Morecambe Bay is more dangerous than it seems. When the tide recedes, quicksand and shifting water channels appear. These fast flowing streams carry sand that feels soft, like smooth silt underfoot. If you step into them, the sand collapses and pulls your foot down. You’ll often hear the crashing sound of sand falling into the rushing water. For safety, it’s best to stay on the pebbled beach near the car park.
Can You Go on the Beach at Silverdale? Access and Beach Safety
Please be aware that the tide can come in very quickly. If you are on a sandbank as the tide rises, it’s easy to become stranded. For this reason, and to let the birds feed undisturbed, Bay Search and Rescue advises against walking on the sands when the tide is out. Instead, enjoy the beauty of the area safely from the shore.

Absolutely! I was surprised by how quiet the beach was, especially on a rare sunny day in a rainy August. Despite the calm, the beach has a unique charm. It truly is a hidden gem, just a stone’s throw from the Lake District.

After a peaceful day of sunbathing and birdwatching, head up the hill into Silverdale village. The Silverdale Hotel is a welcoming, family run spot offering excellent food and a wonderful drinks menu. If you continue up Emesgate Lane, you’ll also find cafés and local shops-perfect for a relaxed afternoon stroll around the village.
